PROTECT KATAHDIN LAKE
THE ISSUE:
Maine's
historic bid to preserve the pristine lands around this gem is seriously
threatened. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity may be lost because some
special interests do not support the carefully negotiated agreement.
The State has reached an agreement with the current owner to purchase6,015 acres around Katahdin Lake to be added to Baxter State Park. Flanked by old-growth forest and reflecting Mount Katahdin in its waters, Katahdin Lake has long been the destination of hikers, paddlers, and artists looking for the unspoiled tranquility of wilderness.
WHAT YOU CAN DO Email your legislator by clicking on the link below. Tell them to support the carefully negotiated agreement to preserve this special place.
A public hearing on LD 2015
is being held Monday, February 27, at 9:30a.m. in the Augusta Civic Center,
Capital Pine Tree Room, 2nd floor, North Wing. Opposition to the proposed
acquisition has recently surfaced in the legislature. Please come to the public
hearing and speak in support of this project. http://www.maine.gov/legis/senate/
Please take action by Wednesday, March 1, 2006. For more information contact the Chapter Office at 761-5616. |
