Direction Setting Meeting

    Special Invitation

to Sierra Club members

Have you heard of the Sierra Summit?

The Sierra Summit is the Sierra Club’s first-ever national environmental convention and expo takes place in San Francisco, September 18-11 2005 at the Moscone Center.

Direction Setting Process

The Sierra Club Direction Setting process culminates at Summit, but begins this summer. At Summit, 1,000 delegates will meet face to face to discuss the future work of the Sierra Club. Maine appointed 5 delegates and they want your input before attending Summit.

We are inviting you to come together with other members on July 9 in Rockland to provide that input.

The Direction Setting Process will be the most inclusive and extensive direction setting process the Club has ever had and it will result in material changes to how the Club allocates resources. This is the opportunity for chapters to voice what they see as the real needs of the Club and ensure that needed direction is set.

Purpose of the Directions Setting Process:

Our work on July 9 will inform the delegates, already chosen, and some of whom will be at the July 9 meeting, what the Maine chapter thinks is important.

You will be asked to discuss and respond to a range of open-ended and specific questions about where we find ourselves as environmental activists today, how we envision the future, and specifically what they believe the Club as a whole should commit its energy to nationwide. There will be a range of questions, but the outcome will center around:

  1. How the Club should support and engage our grassroots capacity -- to directly enlist and build greater 'power in numbers' in our communities, and

  2. How the Club should work nationwide to galvanize American's attention and action around shared values and vision -- to build momentum for key conservation goals.

We hope you will join us on July 9.

Sincerely,

Barbara Winterson, Maine Chapter Chair
