Sierra Club Book Club FAQs

Why read books about the environment?

It’s fun, inspiring and educational! Just think: a single book can change the world. Several major books have profoundly influenced the direction and force of the environmental movement - for instance, Rachel Carson's 1962 book Silent Spring. Classics like Thoreau’s Maine Woods and newer gems like Neil Rolde’s The Interrupted Forest-A History of Maine’s Wildlands feed the mind, while discussions serve to broaden our understanding of these works while we connect with other members.

Which books?

In the Sierra Club Book Club, we read and discuss books on the relationship between humans and the natural environment. The emphasis is on Maine writers, or books about Maine’s unique environment. Women authors are highlighted also.

Most books are readily available, moderately priced, and worthwhile to own. Some are from small Maine presses, and harder to find. We have a lending program, and the leader owns and lends each book.

What's involved?

The Sierra Club Book Club is offered as a free monthly discussion group. Participants read all or most of the book and discuss various issues related to character, plot, and environmental themes. Drop in sometime and check it out. We never know where the discussion will lead, which is part of the fun. You need not attend every time; this is not a formal book club!
