America's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge at risk yet again –

the Senate Budget bill would sacrifice America's arctic treasure

ISSUE:

We need YOUR help to save the Arctic Refuge from oil drilling: Please call Maine Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins

BACKGROUND:

Once again the myth of 'environmentally gentle' oil and gas exploration is exposed as a lie.  After two weeks, crews are still cleaning up what was just announced to be the largest oil spill in the history of Alaska's North Slope.  The crude oil spill of approximately 267,000 gallons occurred just west of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge at Prudhoe Bay.

Right now, cleanup crews are battling frigid (70 below with wind chill) temperatures and hope to collect, at best, about 90 percent of the spilled crude. So much for being gentle. Clearly, oil drilling is a dirty business and has no business in a world class wildlife refuge.

Meanwhile, back in Washington pro-drilling advocates in the Senate have attached Arctic drilling language to the Senate Budget Resolution being voted on this week.

TAKE ACTION:

Forcing Arctic drilling onto the budget bill is an irresponsible and destructive abuse of the budget process - and a waste of time for the Senate, which rejected Arctic drilling as recently as last December.

Please take action now! Call Maine's Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins and urge them to vote against the Budget Resolution and to protect the Arctic Refuge. Let them know that using the budget to open the Arctic Refuge is not just an old trick, but also a dead-end strategy that should be thrown out, once and for all.
