BACKGROUND

In 2002 the Maine Department of Conservation (DOC) and the U.S. Dept. of the Interior signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) addressing the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.  The MOA, among other things, called for a revision of the Waterway’s 1999 Management Plan. The intention of the review was to revise the plan in light of the Wild and Scenic River Act’s application to the Waterway. DOC has completed its review process and will be holding multiple public meetings to discuss the proposed management plan changes:

·         Address dams, bridges, buildings and the type and number of vehicle access points

·         Incorporate the intent of the federal “wild” river designation

·         Consider the use of the Waterway by Maine citizens

·         Integrate key components of the River Driver’s Agreement

Adoption of the proposed revisions will help to ensure that the Allagash Wilderness Waterway’s Management Plan address the “wild” component of the waterway and will embed key components of the River Driver’s Agreement into the Management Plan.
