How We Curb Global Warming by Cutting Carbon

Emissions 2 Percent Every Year Until 2050. Together.

The world’s scientists agree:

Global warming is real, here, and happening faster than anyone predicted.

But scientists also say we can curb global warming and its consequences—if we take

bold, comprehensive actions now that add up to an 80 percent cut in carbon emissions

by 2050. That's a do-able 2 percent cut a year for each of the next 40 years.

To reach our goal, to build a cleaner, smarter, and safer energy and economic future and

rise to the most urgent challenge of our generation, we must all be part of the solution.

You, me, businesses, and government—we all have a role to play.

To cut carbon emissions 2 percent a year for each of the next 40 years means we must

start right now to make different, better decisions about the energy we use at home, at

work, and as a nation.

Take the 2% pledge.  Sign up to receive tips on how you can reduce your carbon emissions

either by e-mail or by mail.  We will send you a seasonal tip as well as a recipe using local

Maine foods.  Sign up.

Archive of 2% Tips:

June 2007: Buy local, organic produce for optimum nutrition and best farming practices.

July 2007: Use the great outdoors’ solar laundry dryer. Make every other wash day a

cold water wash— save energy, save dollars and lower CO2 emissions.

August 2007: Make sure your tires are properly inflated.  Under-inflated tires means

your vehicle uses more fuel.  Reduce unnecessary idling. Better yet ,walk or ride your

bike. Save Energy, Save Dollars  and Lower CO2 emissions.

September 2007: Most synthetic fertilizers use petroleum products as stock chemicals

and therefore consume more energy in their production.  As you ready your gardens for

winter, build a compost heap and use the compost as a soil additive/fertilizer, instead of

using a synthetic fertilizer.  For those who live in an apartment, try worm compost and

feed your houseplants.

October 2007: With winter on the way, check and repair the caulking in your windows,

check the weatherstripping around outside doors, and consider applying plastic insulation

on single pane windows.  A popular foundation insulation is cut evergreen branches (which

hold insulating snow when it comes close to the foundation) or straw bales which in the

spring can be broken down for garden mulch or composted.

November 2007: Give thanks this month to the planet for the wonders of nature that

brighten our lives.  At your holiday feast bring a green holiday spirit to your table with

organic and local foods.  Your holiday feast can help support family farmers who grow

sustainable meat and produce.  Not only will your holiday meal be better for you and

taste better, you’ll be doing your part for the planet too.

December 2007: Decorate your house with LED lights that use 90 percent less energy

than conventional holiday lights, and can save your family up to $50 on your energy bills

during the holiday season! LED lights are available at many major retailers, including your

local Ace Hardware.
